Did you know that 9 of the original 13 United States (originally colonies) under the Declaration of Independence and then the Constitution had officially sanctioned state religions? That’s right, so where’s that “separation of church and state” back in the days of the founding fathers? The 9 states had official denominations because the Constitution says that the u. s. Congress (the federal lawmaking body) shall make no law establishing religion, that would be a national religion, leaving the individual states to do so as they may please. So Texas could establish, constitutionally, the baptist denomination as the official religion of the state, or catholicism for Massachusetts, wouldn’t that send the atheists into an unmanageable funk?
